Please note: I volunteered to write a blog post earlier this year to help promote FicFest, a new writing contest. I was never involved in planning or running the contest.
#FicFest is a brand new online writer’s contest coming in April. Since there are already several established contests going on throughout the year, it can be a challenge for new contest hosts to come up with a unique concept for their competition. My favorite feature of #Fic Fest is also what makes it stand out as a new contest.
In most writing contests, well over 50% of the entries come from the YA category. As a result, the entries selected for agent rounds also skew heavily toward YA. Things will be different in #FicFest. Each of five age categories (Picture Book, Middle Grade, Young Adult, New Adult, and Adult) will be equally represented in the agent round.
Is equal distribution of selections across all categories a good thing? It probably depends on the category you write. Good or bad, it’s the feature of #Fic Fest that defines it and helps make it appealing, at least to me.
Many of the contest details will be revealed in the next several weeks. Here is a timeline of when the announcements will be made:
