I put The Gangster on hold on my local library’s website, thinking it would be another of Clive Cussler’s nautical adventures featuring Dirk Pitt, Kurt Austin, or Juan Cabrillo. Instead, it turned out to be the latest installment of Cussler’s series featuring Isaac Bell, a detective with the Van Horn Detective Agency in New York City at the turn of the 20th century.

I gave The Gangster three stars on Goodreads. It’s an entertaining read and solidly written, but while I did like it, I also didn’t love it. If I had an infinite amount of time to read an infinite number of books, I’d definitely read more of the Isaac Bell novels. Since my time is limited, I’ll be reading other novels first.
