While The Gadget has some of the same issues as Raptor by the same author, I found this book more satisfying. Although it wasn’t the Middle Grade horror novel I thought it was, the characterization was better and the plot more intriguing if a bit too simple.

Like Raptor, The Gadget was very short at 170 pages. The age of the main character was never stated, and the subject matter was suitable for either MG or YA audiences. I was able to tell pretty early on who the real antagonist of the story would be. I think the markets today for both MG and YA demand more complex stories and a more mature method of storytelling than Zindel’s books provide, so I probably won’t be seeking out any more of his books without a specific reason.
