A Monster Calls came billed as a Middle Grade horror novel. Even though it features a monsters that is capable of horrific deeds, the monster isn’t the scariest part of the book.
The main character’s mother is losing her battle against cancer (I don’t think this qualifies as a spoiler, because it’s included in the blurb on the book’s jacket). For me, that battle and how it affects Conor are the scariest part of the book.
A Monster Calls is a well-written modern fable, but at its heart it is an issue book. I can’t say it was an extremely enjoyable read, but I hope it provides help and comfort for children who find themselves in positions similar to Conor’s.
