The first thing you should know about The Crossover is that it’s written in verse. It’s a style of writing that I tend to avoid, and it threw me for a bit of a loop when I started reading this book. However, once I got into the story and got to know the characters this was less of an issue for me.

The Crossover focuses on the themes of basketball, brotherhood, family, life, loss, and death. It features well-written characters. Because it’s in verse, the words per page are about half of what they are for a regular book, making this an extremely quick read.

I gave The Crossover five stars on Goodreads. Right now I’m already part way through Booked, another Kwame Alexander book in verse with a main character that plays soccer.
