Bombshells is a DC Comics series featuring female superheroes. The series takes place during World War II. I have read that the male superheroes are supposed to be off fighting the war, but have seen no mentions of any male superheroes, and it seems that the female superheroes are doing a lot of the fighting anyway.
I’m reviewing Bombshells as a series instead of doing a write up for each volume separately. These are much faster reads than the Black Panther collections I’ve been reading, finishing the five volumes in 2-3 days.
I had what you might call a love/hate relationship with this series. The things I liked about it, I really liked a lot. The unfortunate flip side of that is that the things I didn’t like really bugged me.
Things I liked: the romance between Mera and Arthur, the relationship between Kara (Supergirl) and her sister Kortni (Stargirl), Zatanna and John Constantine.
Things that annoyed me: Batgirl as a baseball player, backstory told in song, the amount of singing in general, the Joker’s daughter, stilted dialogue.
I gave the individual volumes of Bombshells ratings of either three or four stars on Goodreads. There are additional volumes on the way, but I think I’ll take a pass on reading them.
