The Wild Robot and its sequel, The Wild Robot Escapes have been frequent entries on the New York Times‘ Middle Grade best-seller lists. Because I write upper middle grade novels myself, I decided to read the first book to see if there was anything I could learn from it.

This is a warmhearted book about a robot that washes up on the shore of an island and learns about having friends and surviving from the animal inhabitants there. It’s aimed at a younger audience than the one I target, but the writing is very good, and it is definitely a book with heart.

I gave The Wild Robot four stars on Goodreads and will be reading the sequel soon.
