In pro wrestling, there’s a thing known as a ‘heel turn’, where one of the baby faces (good guys) turns into a bad guy (heel). Heel turns are often effective in reinvigorating fan interest in characters who had maybe grown a little stale. I had seen some reports online a few months back about Steve Rogers crossing over to the dark side – Secret Empire is my first exposure to Steve Rogers as a villain.

I’m not that impressed with Rogers as a bad guy, but was intrigued by the view of America Secret Empire provided. One can’t help but draw parallels between the America we live in under Donald Trump/the GOP and the America of Steve Rogers/Hydra. This book was basically material meant to fill in gaps between events in the larger Secret Empire series, so there wasn’t much plot to it.

I gave Secret Empire three stars, primarily because of it was filler. However it did leave me with some interesting concepts to think about, and it has kindled my interest in reading the full series.
